Some Toyota hybrids start to whine with speed. The sound stays when the petrol engine has stopped and the car is rolling in EV. The tone follows wheel speed, not petrol-engine revs. That is how an MG2 traction-motor bearing or a transmission part behaves.
How to tell them apart
- It is there in EV and disappears when stopped with the brake pressed
- It rises smoothly with km/h, not in steps with revs
- Fine metal appears in the transmission oil
Why not to wait
Swirl from the bearing circulates through the e-CVT and scores the next races. That is a transmission repair, not a battery rebuild. The sooner we drain the oil and confirm the source, the smaller the job. The gearbox layout is in the article on e-CVT.
A constant tone with speed? We will inspect the transmission oil and the MG2 bearing.
