The e-CVT in a Toyota hybrid — how it works and when it needs service

There are no traditional gears, but the drivetrain still needs service. Symptoms and intervals for the e-CVT.

The e-CVT in a Toyota hybrid — how it works and when it needs service

Toyota hybrids use a transmission e-CVT — a planetary set with two motor-generators instead of a conventional gearbox. The driver does not feel “shifts”, but the oil and the bearings still work under load.

How to recognise wear?

  • Vibration at low speed in EV or READY
  • A squeal or hum under regenerative braking
  • Shudder when pulling away from cold

Many symptoms at the start come from worn oil, not from a “broken gearbox”.

Oil in the e-CVT

The maker quotes long intervals, but in city driving and when towing it is worth changing the oil more often. We use only oil approved for that model — the wrong fluid destroys the internal clutches.

e-CVT and the battery

Motor-generators 1 and 2 manage the energy. When the HV battery is weak, the e-CVT more often works at unusual points — hence a feeling of “jerking”. After a battery rebuild the drive often becomes smooth again.
