Driving into deeper water or a flooded car park is, for a hybrid, a risk of losing isolation. The HV battery in a Prius sits under the rear seat or in the boot, and in many SUVs under the seat. Wet contacts and connectors do not forgive a “maybe it will start” attempt.
What not to do
- Do not press POWER if water entered the sills, under the seats or into the boot by the pack
- Do not dry the pack with a cabin hairdryer and do not assume a dry carpet means a dry battery
- Do not drive on if an isolation fault appeared after the water
What to do instead
The car goes on a flatbed. We disconnect the 12 V battery only when it is safe and dry around the terminals. In the workshop we measure HV circuit isolation and check the connectors before anyone applies voltage. Moisture on the contacts after a collision is a different story: the battery after an impact.
The car stood in water? Bring it on a flatbed — we will measure isolation before you apply voltage.
