A hybrid battery after a collision — when to repair and when to replace the pack

Even a small bump can damage the pack case. The safety procedure before charging and driving.

A hybrid battery after a collision — when to repair and when to replace the pack

After a collision the first question is not about the paint, but: whether the HV pack is sealed and safe. Toyota and Lexus have procedures for HV technicians — the driver should know the basic warning signs.

When not to drive on?

  • A “sweet” chemical smell from the boot or under the seat
  • HV fault codes immediately after the impact
  • Battery coolant leak or a deformed case
  • Isolation: crackling, sparks, smoke when connecting a charger (PHEV)

Diagnostics after the damage

An isolation measurement, inspection of the orange connectors, a fault scan and a module test. Sometimes a case or fan replacement is enough, sometimes the whole pack, with documentation for the insurer.

Insurance

Keep photos, the police report and the estimate from an HV workshop. A rebuild is sometimes accepted if the report confirms no structural cell damage.

The car was in a collision? We will test the HV battery before you drive it further.
