Pozycja B on the Toyota and Lexus hybrid lever increases engine braking on a descent. The system raises petrol-engine speed through MG1, the car slows harder and the discs heat less. It is not reverse and it is not a mode for everyday city driving.
When B makes sense
- A long descent where the disc brake heats up quickly
- Wanting to spare the pads on a descent with passengers and luggage
When B gets in the way
On the flat and in traffic B raises fuel use, because the engine is held at speed artificially. On a sharp bend B does not replace the brake: leave reserve on the pedal. Mixing up B and R ends in trying to pull away the wrong way, so check the gear indicator before moving off.
How regeneration itself works is in the article on regenerative braking.
The car slows poorly on a descent or the brakes squeal? We will check regeneration and the discs.
