Brake fluid in a Toyota or Lexus hybrid — why it still has to be changed

Energy recovery does not dry the brake fluid. Water in the DOT fluid still corrodes the actuator and the calipers.

Brake fluid in a Toyota or Lexus hybrid — why it still has to be changed

Regenerative braking heats the discs less often, but brake fluid it still absorbs water from the air. In a hybrid this fluid also feeds the actuator. Wet DOT lowers the boiling point and corrodes the pump and the calipers.

When to replace

  • By the cap: usually DOT3 or DOT4, roughly every two years
  • When the fluid is dark or the pedal travel grows after harder braking
  • At every actuator replacement and when the system has air in it

How we do it

Topping up to the mark does not pull water out of the lines. We replace the fluid by bleeding, in a hybrid often with a scanner so the actuator pump flushes the circuit. Pads are a separate check: pads and discs.

Fluid dark or the pedal travel growing? We will replace it and bleed the system.
