Inverter coolant in a hybrid — a separate circuit, not engine coolant

Pink fluid in the small tank cools the electronics. It is not a top-up for the petrol engine.

Inverter coolant in a hybrid — a separate circuit, not engine coolant

Besides cooling the petrol engine, a hybrid has a separate inverter circuit. A small reservoir, often with pink fluid, takes heat from the inverter and the electric motors. It is not the petrol engine expansion tank and it is not the battery fan in the cabin.

What a low level looks like

  • Power drop after a longer drive
  • A hybrid system or overheating message
  • Loss with no trace under the engine — the leak is often at the pump, a hose or the electronics radiator

What not to do

Do not top up every week with “any” concentrate. Sediment clogs the narrow passages. A loss means a leak, not normal evaporation. We change the fluid by mileage and always after the circuit has been opened. Cooling of the pack itself is described separately: battery cooling system.

Fluid dropping or the hybrid losing power in the heat? We will check the inverter circuit.
