Head gasket on a 3rd-generation Prius — symptoms and risk

White smoke and falling coolant on a 3rd-generation Prius should be checked before blaming the battery.

Head gasket on a 3rd-generation Prius — symptoms and risk

In a 3rd-generation Prius (engine 2ZR-FXE, roughly model years 2009–2015) and in some Auris Hybrid and Lexus CT cars there is a head gasket. The symptom is easy to confuse with uneven hybrid-system operation.

Typical signs

  • Coolant loss with no clear puddle under the car
  • White smoke when cold that disappears once warm
  • Shudder when the petrol engine joins in
  • Rising temperature or a trace of exhaust gas in the reservoir

Why not to wait

Driving with a blown gasket ends in overheating and a warped head. That is an engine repair, not a battery rebuild. We start with a cooling-system pressure test and a measurement of exhaust gas in the coolant. If the engine is sealed, only then do we look for the cause in the HV system.

Prius losing coolant or smoking when cold? We will do a pressure test before you touch the head.
