Rodents and a Toyota or Lexus hybrid — chewed HV cables

A chewed orange cable ends in an isolation fault. The car should not be driven on.

Rodents and a Toyota or Lexus hybrid — chewed HV cables

Insulation on some car wires is plant-based, so rodents they readily chew it. In a hybrid a damaged orange cable or a sensor loom is enough to stop the car entering READY.

How to tell

  • It drove in the evening, in the morning there is an isolation fault
  • Tooth marks, nesting or droppings by the under-bonnet cover and by the pack
  • A hybrid system message with no recent collision and no coolant loss

Repair

We do not wrap an orange cable in ordinary tape and drive “home”. HV insulation has to withstand hundreds of volts. The loom is repaired or replaced and leakage is measured before the contactors close again. Do not leave pet food in the garage, and shield the vulnerable sections.

The car died overnight in the garage and will not enter READY? We will check the loom insulation.
