The engine air filter in a hybrid works less often than in an ordinary car, but when the petrol engine joins in on a trip or a hill, a clogged element it chokes it at once. Fuel use rises and acceleration fades exactly when the driver expects help from the engine.
Symptoms
- Higher consumption out of town even with calm driving
- Weaker pull once the petrol engine is already at revs
- Mixture corrections if the element is wet or holed
What not to confuse it with
This is not the cabin filter and not the battery fan filter. We check the element at a service and replace it when it is grey. Blasting compressed air “straight through” drives dust deeper. The pack fan is a separate topic: battery cooling.
Fuel use suddenly up on a trip? We will check the filter, the mixture and the battery.
