The EGR valve on a Toyota hybrid — cold jerking and uneven running

Short trips clog the EGR. The engine jerks when cold, and the battery is not necessarily the cause.

The EGR valve on a Toyota hybrid — cold jerking and uneven running

Short trips do not warm a hybrid engine for long, so the EGR valve and cooler carbon builds up. This applies especially to the 3rd-generation Prius and the Auris Hybrid. The car jerks when the petrol engine joins in, and the driver hears that “the hybrid is already failing”.

Symptoms of a clogged EGR

  • Jerking and uneven revs when cold, smoother once warm
  • A drop in power when the engine tries to join under load
  • Exhaust-recirculation or misfire codes with no sign of a worn battery

Repair

Cleaning the passages or replacing the EGR cooler restores smooth running. Pack diagnostics alone will not remove that carbon. If after the EGR work the jerking remains only under heavy load, only then do we go back to the battery and the spark plugs.
