Toyota hybrid service mode — why the engine is forced to run for an oil change

Without forcing the engine to run, hybrid oil is easy to underfill or overfill.

Toyota hybrid service mode — why the engine is forced to run for an oil change

In normal driving the hybrid engine shuts itself off, when it is not needed. During an oil change that gets in the way: draining stops and starts, and the dipstick reading is unreliable if the petrol engine keeps stalling.

Why service mode exists

  • The engine runs continuously until the oil is drained and refilled
  • We check the level with the engine running, then stopped, following the procedure for that model
  • We leave the mode only after the check, not halfway through filling

What not to do in the garage

Pedal sequences from a forum easily leave the controller in the wrong state or fail to hold the engine at speed until the end. At Green Serwis we enable the service procedure before draining the oil. How often to change oil on short trips is in the text on oil intervals.

Leave a hybrid oil change to a workshop that has service mode.
