Fuel use in a hybrid — how to measure it honestly and what the result depends on

Why two fill-ups give different results and how to calculate fuel use without fooling yourself.

Fuel use in a hybrid — how to measure it honestly and what the result depends on

A hybrid can show on the computer 4–5 l/100 km, and a calculation from the fill-up comes out at 6 l. That is not a trick — different methods and driving conditions change the result a lot.

How to measure fuel use “at the pump”?

  1. Fill until the click (the same way every time).
  2. Write down the mileage and the litres.
  3. Formula: (litres / km) × 100 = l/100 km.

Compare results only on a similar route (town versus motorway) and temperature.

What inflates fuel use?

  • Short trips in winter (the engine often warms itself on fuel)
  • A weak HV battery — the engine charges the pack more often
  • Low tyre pressure and a roof box
  • Aggressive driving with frequent full acceleration

The trip computer

Treat it as a trend, not an oracle. After a battery service or a 12 V replacement, fuel use often drops by 0.3–0.8 l, because the car less often “rescues” a weak pack.
