OBD and hybrid battery apps — what they give the driver and what they do not

Torque, Hybrid Assistant and others — useful trends, but be careful how you read them.

OBD and hybrid battery apps — what they give the driver and what they do not

Hybrid drivers readily use OBD2 adapters and apps that show module voltages, temperatures and SOC. That helps, but you need to know what each value means.

What is worth watching?

  • Voltage differences between modules (delta V)
  • Battery temperature while driving and after standing
  • How often the HV fan runs

What not to do through OBD

  • Clearing codes without fixing the cause
  • “Resetting” battery adaptations without a service procedure
  • Comparing values from the internet with no model or temperature context

OBD versus workshop diagnostics

In an HV workshop we use isolated testers, a pack load and high-voltage safety procedures. A phone app will not replace a measurement of cell capacity under a controlled load.

You have logs from an OBD app? Come in — we will compare them with a workshop test.
