Buying a used Prius or Lexus hybrid — what to look at

Advice when buying a used Toyota or Lexus hybrid. Battery diagnostics, service history and what to look at before you buy.

A used Toyota Prius or Lexus hybrid — what to look at

Used Toyota and Lexus hybrids are very popular — they are economical and reliable. To avoid unpleasant surprises after the purchase, it is worth checking a few things before you sign, including the condition of the hybrid battery. In this article we point out what to look at.

Battery diagnostics before you buy

The hybrid battery is the most expensive part to replace (a rebuild or a new pack). Before you buy it is worth commissioning a professional diagnostic — a code read, a measurement of cell voltages and capacity. That tells you whether the battery is in good condition and whether an expensive repair is waiting in the next few years. At Green Serwis we do that diagnostic “live” — you can come with the car you are considering or arrange a visit with the seller.

Mileage and age — rough limits

In other articles on our blog we give consistent guidance: NiMH batteries (older Prius and Lexus cars) usually last about 8–10 years, Li-ion (newer models) about 10–15 years. Problems often appear after 150,000–250,000 km. That does not mean a car with higher mileage is bad from the start — but it is then worth having the battery diagnosed and possibly negotiating the price with a future rebuild in mind.

Service history and checks

  • The service book — whether services were done regularly; whether at higher mileage (for example above 80,000–100,000 km) anyone checked the hybrid system
  • No hidden codes — the seller may have cleared the faults; a professional read will show the history and any returning codes (for example P0A80)
  • The battery cooling system — whether the fans work and whether there is a burning smell; overheating shortens battery life
“Buying a used Prius or Lexus with a battery in good condition is an excellent investment. Diagnostics before the purchase are the key — they save stress and money.”

The test drive — what to notice

During the test drive:

  1. Check whether the car enters EV (electric) mode and holds it for a moment — if it never runs on electricity, or only for an instant, the battery may be weak
  2. Listen to the fans behind the rear seats or in the boot — loud, continuous running after a short drive can mean a cooling problem or an overheated battery
  3. Check the fuel use on the computer — if the figure is very high despite calm driving, the hybrid system may not be working properly

Summary

When buying a used Prius or a hybrid Lexus, do not skip diagnostics of the battery and the hybrid system. The consistent advice (regular driving at least once a week for about 15–20 km, avoiding a stand longer than 2 weeks) applies to your use after the purchase — if the previous owner left the car standing for a long time, the battery may have suffered. At Green Serwis we will help assess the hybrid before the purchase and after it.
