A long stand for a Toyota or Lexus hybrid — how to prepare the car and what to do on return

A hybrid left for a holiday or a longer trip away. How to prepare the car, what to do about the battery and what to do on return — in line with the advice on the blog.

A long stand for a Toyota or Lexus hybrid — preparation

We recommend that a hybrid does not stand longer than 2 weeks without being driven — that keeps this consistent with the other articles on the blog. Sometimes the car does have to stand longer (a holiday, a work trip, another person not using the car). In this article we explain how to prepare a Toyota or Lexus for a longer stand and what to do on return.

Before the stand

  • Charge the battery — before you leave it, drive about 15–20 km so the battery has a moderate charge (not full and not empty)
  • Disconnect the 12 V battery (optional) — for a stand of more than a month this reduces the risk of the starter battery going flat; if in doubt, check the model’s manual
  • Park in a dry, cool place — a garage or a carport; avoid direct sun and damp
“A long stand is always some risk for the hybrid battery. The shorter the stand, the better — up to 2 weeks there is usually no problem with a healthy car.”

What to do on return?

  1. Check the 12 V battery — if it was disconnected, reconnect it; if the car will not start, charge or replace the starter battery
  2. Start the car and drive calmly for about 15–20 km — let the hybrid battery go through a few charge and discharge cycles; avoid hard driving straight away
  3. Watch the warning lights — if “Check Hybrid System” or “Check Engine” lights up, read the codes and, if needed, have a workshop diagnostic

A stand longer than a month

After a very long stand (several months) the hybrid battery can discharge too far. On return it is worth booking a battery diagnostic — we will check the cell voltages and balance the pack if needed. For the future: if you can, do not go beyond 2 weeks without driving, or ask someone to drive about 15–20 km every 1–2 weeks.

Summary

Preparing a hybrid for a longer stand and sensible steps on return limit the risk to the battery. The rules match the rest of the blog: short stands of up to 2 weeks are fine; longer ones need preparation and, on return, a calm drive (about 15–20 km) and possibly a diagnostic. At Green Serwis we will help assess the battery after a long stand.
