The brake actuator on a Toyota hybrid — a hum and a hard pedal

A long hum from the front and a hard pedal is often the actuator pump, not worn pads.

The brake actuator on a Toyota hybrid — a hum and a hard pedal

A Toyota hybrid has no classic vacuum brake booster. Pressure is built by the brake actuator: a pump and a pressure reservoir. A short hum when the door opens can be normal. Humming for several seconds, a hard pedal and a longer stopping distance are not.

Failure symptoms

  • Pedal hard from the first press
  • Brake or ABS light together with a system message
  • Pads and discs are still thick, yet the car brakes poorly

Repair

Replacing the actuator needs bleeding with a scanner, not just “pumping the pedal”. Skimming the discs will not fix it. Pads under regenerative braking have a separate article: pads and discs in a hybrid.

Pedal going hard or the pump will not stop? We will check the actuator and bleed the system with a scanner.
